Why We Should All Care About Setting An Adult Example

Adulthood is a weird progression. As we grow, we begin to challenge all of the preconceptions about adulthood we might have had as children. For one, we become much less idealistic. An old adage suggests that if you’re not liberal as a teenager and young adult, you have no heart. If you’re not more conservative as an older person, you have no brain. But of course, that statement holds no shred of truth, nor will this be a political post. We’re simply using it to illustrate how we can often find ourselves changing as we grow, to the point where we forget our younger and more forthright self.

However, we should all, even those who are not parents, consider setting an example for the youth. It’s easy to complain about their culture, to be dismissive of children, but they seriously are the future. For that reason, playing your part can be important too. Let us consider how and why:

Just Because You Might Not Have Kids, It Doesn’t Mean You Won’t Be Around Them

Not all of us our parents. But it can often be that when we make this decision, through will or circumstance, we can forget just how much influence we can have over the younger generation. How we regard them, set an example, how we behave, it all translates into what they deem appropriate and how they might react. For example, it might be that in your career, you’ll accept worker’s experience programs from the local school. Your ability to show the power of hard work and to appreciate your opportunities might turn a young life around.

You never know when you will have nephews, nieces, a colleagues or friend’s child around you. For that reason, it’s important to know how to act. How to curtail your language. And more than that, how to demonstrate your virtues. Children learn by osmosis, even if only around you for a short amount of time. It’s important to keep that in mind.

Communication Is King

As we get older, we realize just how important communicating with one another is. We likely see ourselves turning into our parents to some degree, and realize just how the signals we received as a child can turn our attention and set our course in life. For this reason, it’s important to try to set a communicative example, no matter if we are a parent or not. If so, it might be that suggesting parent communication opportunities could be vital for a school to feel more confident in reaching those they have a duty to. If not, it could be that healing the rifts of your family, in learning how to explain yourself and how to prevent giving into anger or difficulty could be one of the best insights you will ever yield. In fact, you never know just how useful this could be until you try it. After all, this all contributes to the environment that children will find themselves in, and how within the family dynamics, issues can grow or be silenced with appropriate or inappropriate action.

Stop Referring To It As ‘Adulting’

We can often feel that adult life is long, boring and hard. To be honest, from time to time, that can be true. However, this kind of lamenting attitude can only serve to prevent us from seeing the good in our lives, and can also be a self-defeating attitude.  This new term ‘adulting’ has come from that. Of course, it’s supposed to be used in a humorous context. We might suggest that having to completing a bunch of chores such as laundry and cleaning our homes is ‘adulting.’ But used too sparingly, it can suggest that adulting is something we refer to negative matters with.

If a child internalizes this, they’ll lament the loss of their childhood to quite a strong degree. It’s this explored feeling that projected The Catcher In The Rye to such an astronomical level of fame and appreciation. The first step we can all consider is to take our responsibility well, to see the benefit of ‘adulting,’ and to embody it as something to appreciate, not to be scared of. You might be profoundly impressed to see how beneficial this new attitude can be, and how this attitude can help set a positive example for the children.

Defeat Bad Habits

Everyone needs a vice. In fact, many of us are suspicious of those who seem too perfect, who never seem to embody any form of worry or trouble, those who seem to float above us all with their life in perfect order. But still, that is no excuse to allow ourselves to let go of ourselves, to give in to any temptation we can. For example, smoking around children is a very bad habit, and through passive contact can slowly lead them to health issues.

But more than that – it’s what you condone that they begin to understand. For example, it might be that every now and then, you look after your sibling’s children. Feeding them only fast food or other sugary foods might signify that when Mom and Dad are away, eating unhealthy food is more than possible, and even something to be achieved. Defeating bad habits and staying consistent in your approach will help children learn that there is better and worse, not only what you can get away with.

You NEED to stay hygienic, in your surroundings, in your personal grooming, in everything you do. No matter if you are a godparent, an uncle, an auntie, a parent, or perhaps simply an older sibling, hygiene needs to be emphasized as the default standard of living. If you cannot provide this impression, children will think that applying any form of habit like this is appropriate, and they will suffer as a result. That doesn’t bear thinking about, so be sure to set this golden standard for yourself no matter what.

With this advice, we hope you’re much better able to set that perfected adult example.

Coping Strategies For Anxious Times

If you are someone who suffers from extreme feelings of anxiousness or even panic attacks, then learning how to deal with them, cope, and even alleviate those feelings can be a massive benefit. These things do not discriminate and they can happen to anyone. Plus, they can come and go at different times in your life, depending on how stressed, depressed, or how generally unwell you are feeling. So having some strategies up your sleeve that work for you is a must, as you may only suffer from anxiety and panic attacks from time to time, but even more relevant if they are a regular occurrence for you.

So with that in mind, here are some of the things that you can be doing to make sure that you can deal with these episodes, so you can carry on living your life.

  • Take some time-out. There will be different things that will work for different people. For some, time out to practice yoga can be just what they need. For others, it can be listening to music or meditating. If you can, then how about getting a massage, or reading up about some relaxation techniques that you could learn. If you take a step back from the situation or the people that can trigger this for you, then you can focus and clear your head. Being in the great outdoors is a massive help too, as you have so many other things to focus on, rather than the anxious feelings.

  • The old saying goes, you are what you eat. So if that is true, you need to be eating well-balanced meals as often as you can. When you skip meals it can make you feel lethargic and tired, so avoiding skipping meals. If you’re not feeling too hungry, then at least make sure that you have some natural, energy-boosting snacks to hand, rather than reaching for a candy bar or junk food.

  • On a similar note, you need to think about other things that you are taking into your body, as they can have an impact on how you feel. Things like alcohol and caffeine can, in fact, aggravate feelings of anxiety and even trigger panic attacks; so that should be reason enough to limit those things in your life. Cigarettes are also a good thing to steer clear of, as they can be an appetite suppressant, as well as being highly-addictive, which can aggravate feelings of anxiousness. If you need help to quit, then choosing vape pens could help, as you wean yourself back, with the goal of quitting eventually. This can help with anxiety too, as you won’t have the cold-turkey element of quitting.

  • Getting enough sleep is so vital for great health, and especially when you’re feeling stressed or anxious. Often, when you have these feelings, it is because you are extra stressed or worn out. These are the times when you need good quality sleep, and plenty of it too. Eating well, exercising, and cutting down on things like caffeine can help massively, as well as limiting screen time.

  • Exercise, and doing so daily, is something that we all know can help our health. But it can be such a good mood booster too. When you move and exercise, your body gets a flood of happy hormones, and that can lift your mood and alleviate stress. So find ways to make time for exercise, in whatever method you enjoy best. Because, of course, you’re only going to stick to it if you enjoy it.

  • There may be situations that you just need to get out of, in order to help how you feel. But that isn’t always going to be possible. So instead, take some deep breaths. When you take the time to Inhale and exhale slowly, it can calm you down, and give you a moment to process what is happening. A simple technique, but it can really work.

  • On a similar note, when you can’t just remove yourself from a situation, try something like counting to ten slowly. You can go for longer if needed, but it just gives you some time to process things and make sense of what is happening, while you decide what to do next.

  • You might get some of your stressed and anxious feelings from a feeling of insecurity and because of low self-esteem; this is not uncommon. But just learning to do your best, however that looks, can be a good way of coping with things. Don’t aim for perfection, unless in that specific thing, that is achievable for you. Be proud of what you are doing, and how close to perfection you can get.

  • It can be hard to let go of some things and not be in control, can’t it? But being able to accept that you cannot control everything is vital to living a healthy and happy life. Putting things into perspective can really help, as you focus on what is really going on.

  • Humor can be a coping mechanism for many people; having a good laugh does go a long way. Don’t forget to make this part of your life too.

  • Maintaining a positive attitude can be hard, but it can really help. With some humor, it can help you to look on the bright side of things. Replace negative thoughts that you have with happy and positive ones.

  • Learning what triggers your anxiety is something that can help you to cope better. So think about what happens or what is going on, when you get those feelings. Is it family, work, travel, pressure, or another thing that you can identify?

  • It is good to talk. So look for someone that you feel comfortable enough to talk to about how you are feeling. If you can, and feel able, then tell friends and family that you feel anxious or overwhelmed; they may be able to do things to help. You could also talk to a professional, like a doctor or therapist if you’d rather.

Alternative Ways To Deal With Your Stress

Dealing with stress can be difficult, and that is why, for many people, it doesn’t happen. Instead of dealing with it, they end up being buried under it and become a cloud of stress and anxiety, which is never where you want to be. For this reason, we have come up with a couple of ways that you can go about dealing with the stress that you have in your life, to lead to a more relaxed way of living. If you are interested in finding out more, keep reading down below.

The first thing that we are going to look at is yoga. You want to be able to do this on a daily or at least every two days to get the full relaxing benefits of this type of exercise. Yoga is widely regarded as the best way to manage stress as it requires you to get your body in all kinds of positions that you never thought possible, and you need to release all of the built-up tension in order to do this. There are a number of classes available for you to join, and by doing this, you get the added benefit of an instructor helping you, ensuring that you are doing all the moves correctly. Or, you can look it up online and use guides that tell you how to get into all the different positions.

The only thing that you need to be careful of is that you don’t hurt yourself in the process. Don’t try to do anything that you are not ready for and skip steps because your body is not going to thank you for it. If you do this, it is not going to be a relaxing activity for you to do at the end of the day, but rather something that adds to your stress and causes you pain.

There are a variety of medicines that you can use to help you reduce your stress levels. If you go to your doctor, they will be able to recommend and possibly prescribe some of the best on the market depending on how stressed you are. They might end up putting you on daily medication to help manage this, or they could just give you the names of some of the over the counter medications for more mild cases. The doctor is going to be a useful place to go if the stress in your life has you at breaking point as there are a number of methods that they can give you to try before medication if you don’t want to take up this option.

There is also another option for you to consider, and that is using CBD oil. You might not realize just how good this can be for bringing down your stress levels and helping you chill out, but we can promise that even after one use you are going to see a big difference. This is not for everyone, and you should make sure you have done your research before you settle on this option.

Breathing Exercises

Have you ever looked up breathing exercises online? These are not just used for stress, but they can also be used for a number of different situations, which is why you may have heard them mentioned in conversation in the past. There are many different guides online that can help you with the kind of breathing exercises that you can use to help yourself calm down and reduce the amount of stress that you are feeling. All you have to do is type in something like ‘best breathing exercises to reduce stress,’ and you will be greeted with a whole host of options for you to try.

This is becoming more and more popular these days as it is a natural method that does not require you to buy anything or even leave your home. As well as this, these can be performed in public places as well as at home as they do not usually draw a lot of attention to the one who is completing them. You don’t have to be embarrassed about using these in public if you get stressed out for this reason which a lot of people find very handy.

Take A Break

Did you ever just stop and think that you need to give yourself a break? Sometimes the reason that we are so stressed is that we haven’t given ourselves the time we need to process everything that is going on in our lives, and for that reason, we get wound up without realizing what is going on. If this is the case for you, then it really could be as simple as giving yourself a couple of days to unwind and get yourself back in the right mindset for your day to day life. A lot of people feel bad for taking this time but they shouldn’t because, at the end of the day, your health needs to come above everything else. Stress is a very real condition and one that needs to be managed if it is taking over your life.

Cut Out Stressful Things

Another simple solution that is very effective is to identify the things in your life that are causing you the most stress and get rid of them. We know that sometimes this is easier said than done, but it is necessary to move forward in a positive way. Whether this is a toxic relationship with a family member or loved one doesn’t matter because even this needs to be gone. Try not to let emotion guide you here, because it is important that you recognize your health must come first above everything else in your life. If this means letting go of certain things that are bringing you down, this is what needs to happen.

We hope that you have found this article helpful, and now see some of the alternative ways that you can deal with the stress in your life.

7 Ways To Be There For Your Children

When you have children, you will realize that there is nothing quite so precious in the entire world as those lives you have created. However, you only have a very short space of time to spend with them. You will soon be checking out private schools or state schools, and they will be out finding their own friends, growing up and living their own lives, and as they grow older, they will need you less and less for everyday things. Therefore, it is essential that you make the most of the time you do have together as much as possible, and to do that you need to be entirely present with your children. Here are some ways to ensure you can do it whenever you can.

No Technology

You can’t be completely present with your children if you’re constantly checking your smartphone for social media updates or looking at your emails, or even answering text messages. If you are going to be spending time with your children, you need to leave your technology alone. If you are worried about switching it off entirely, then at least leave it in another room. Children don’t need a great deal when you think about it, but they do need to have your total attention. The great thing is that once you start truly engaging with your kids, you will forget about your mobile devices and online life, at least for a little while.

Get Healthy

If you are unwell, you can’t be there for your children in the way you would like. Sometimes sickness strikes, and there is nothing that you can do about it, but sometimes it is our lifestyles and unhealthy habits that can make us ill. When this is the case, it is entirely in your power to turn things around, get more healthy, and be there for your children both physically and mentally. It can be hard to get started, especially when habits are very ingrained, but if you start slowly, it will be much easier.  If you eat a lot of junk food, try cutting down gradually. If you don’t exercise, try walking instead of driving. It all adds up to a healthier you and your children will thank you for it.

Make The Time

Everyone is busy, but that doesn’t mean you can’t make time for your children. They do need to be your priority, so if they ask you to play with them and you were planning to vacuum or empty the dishwasher, pick your children over the chore. The chore can wait, and it certainly won’t be negatively affected by your inattention! Children, however, can develop emotional issues if their parents are never able to play with them or be there with them, so it is essential to do so. Just 10 minutes here and there is a great start, and it’s enough to play a game of hide-and-seek or snap, or tag.

Listen When They Speak

Children love to talk and tell stories, and they really want their parents to listen to them when they do so, but busy parents can often be guilty of trying to rush the story to the end, or only half listening to what their children are saying because they’re doing something else at the same time. This is a practice that you should stop as soon as you can; you need to focus your attention entirely on the child and what they are saying, as it will make a big difference and will even strengthen the bond between you both.

Look At Them

Just as important as listening to your children is looking at them. It can be so easy not to look up from what you are doing when your child wants to ask you something or needs you to look at something. However, looking can be a great way to engage with them truly. Their voice will give you an idea of how they are feeling, but it isn’t until really looking into their eyes that you will understand precisely what it is they want to say, and it can make all the difference to how you respond and how they react. Looking at your child reassures them that they are important and that you care. If you are too busy to give them your full attention, you need to ask them politely to wait if they can and tell you in a little bit so that you can genuinely engage with them.

Do Simple Things

You can’t realistically take your kids out every day for exciting trips or expensive theme parks. It’s too tiring and costs too much money, plus if you go out every day, it becomes a lot less exciting and can even become something that no one enjoys. Therefore, although occasional days out like this are a good idea, and can be ideal ways to make lovely memories and bond with your children, it’s important to do simple things together as well. A quick trip to the local grocery store can be a good time if you have your children help out and work out what dishes you’re going to make before you go, for example. Households chores can be done together, and this makes them quicker but also teaches the children how to keep a house clean and tidy, and how to be more independent.

Sleep Better

For optimum health, an adult should be sleeping between seven to eight hours a night – some will need more and some less, and it will depend on the person in question. For parents, this can be quite a hard thing to do because when their children go to bed, they will want to stay up later to get some ‘me time,’ plus they will also tend to get up early before the children so that they can make a good start on the day ahead. It means getting fewer hours of sleep than they really should, and this is fine for a short while, but if it becomes the norm, you can become rather unwell. Lack of sleep means that the body can’t repair itself. Even if it means not getting much time to yourself, it is best to get enough sleep. You will be able to engage better with your children (and everyone else), and you’ll feel better for it.

Care For A Carer

We all dread seeing our parents’ health deteriorate. They’re solid and unshakeable figures in our lives, and we convince ourselves they’re invincible. At some stage, though, the chances are that your parent’s health will start to falter. And, when it does, you’ll probably want to help them keep a decent quality of life. This is a way of giving back for everything they’ve done for you in the past. It’s also a chance to be as involved as possible in what’s happening to them.

IDespite the clear benefits, though, many of us go about care all wrong. We stretch ourselves in all manner of ways. That can harm our health. When that happens, there’s no way of doing our best by our parents. To avoid these common traps, keep reading to find out how you can care for yourself so you can care for your parents,

Remove stress where you can

Seeing parental health deteriorate is, in itself, stressful. You can’t do much about that. But, there are some stressors you can reduce to avoid carer burnout. Turning to assisted living care would, by far, be your best bet. That doesn’t mean giving up your part in this care journey. It merely means resting easy that someone else is checking your parents when you can’t. It may even mean that you can keep your visits until after work instead of rushing around each morning. And, let’s be honest; knowing that a professional is keeping an eye on things will help to destress you in itself.

Always research lifts

If your parents begin to struggle with mobility, they may need you to lift them at times. Rushing ahead here will lead to injuries which stop you lifting anything. Instead of making that mistake, always research lifts before you attempt them. If you have a team of carers, ask them to show you what to do. If not, head to sites like YouTube. Video tutorials will show you the best ways to lift someone without injury. You may also find it well worth your while to invest in proper lifting equipment which means that you can keep your loved one safe without ever risking your health.

Rest up plenty

This last one is simple, but it’s all too easy to forget. If you’re juggling care with a full-time job, you may neglect to rest up properly yourself. But burning the candle at both ends will never end well. Make sure, then, that you’re taking plenty of time to rest up where you need to. That means getting to sleep at a decent time and making space for yourself during your evenings. Again, a carer could work well here. Or, you may find that talking to your boss allows you to shuffle things around and make more time in your days. Either way, you can’t care for your parents if you’re running on empty all the time. You’ll fall foul to all manner of illnesses before you know, and that won’t help anybody!

How To Keep Your Elderly Loved One Safe At Home

All people and families are affected by aging, it is an inevitable part of life. Your body and mind are changing, and some things you used to do on a regular basis are turning into challenges. It can be scary, but we need to understand the processes that are happening and act accordingly. If you have senior parents or relatives, there are many tips on how to help them lead the best, and more importantly, the safest version of their lives. Aging can affect their physique, well-being and overall mental state. Transitional phases can be hard on them, especially if they have impaired mobility or health-related issues.

Consult with experts and family, and provide them accessories and safety measures that they deserve. Remember that some of the daily activities that are simple and basic human needs can become dangerous. This article will cover the most important aspects of keeping your elderly loved ones safe in their homes.

First things first

Depending on the condition and mobility of a person, routines like going to buy groceries or pay the bills can turn into a serious problem. They might not be able to carry all that stuff, fall on the way home, or lose money and important documents. You can begin by helping them with these kinds of tasks. Help them prepare food, perhaps stock their fridge with fruits and vegetables, healthy snacks and pre-cooked meals for a week in advance. Also, they might not want to follow their dietary restrictions, so in this way, you can alternate the ingredients without them even realizing.

What they won’t admit

Dressing and personal hygiene are also aspects they are likely not to admit they need help with. Provide them with easy-to-use products, clothes without unnecessary buttons and buckles and proper footwear. Make their home environment more accessible and bright. Most of our beloved seniors have trouble with their eyesight, even if they refuse to admit it. This fact only increases the risk of accidents, so make the entrances and hallways extra bright, and consider putting neon covers over the light switches. If they have to take prescribed medication, leave them schedule notes, set alarms or, if needed, remind them yourself!

Safety measures

Some home modifications are a matter of safety. Start with the bathroom, and install grab bars and safety strips. This step will significantly reduce the possibility of dangerous slips and falls. Other options would include bathtub chairs and benches, as well as the walk-in bathtubs. Consider some changes in the kitchen as well, if the cabinets and counters are too high. Install alarms and smoke detectors. Carefully examine the floor and carpeting situation, replace if needed to prevent trips and slips. If a senior uses a mobility aid, such as a walker or a wheelchair, widening the doorways is obligatory.

You must also understand that spending every waking moment by their side is simply not feasible. However, getting quality devices like alarms and safety pendants made by a good company, like National Health Australia for example, can help you out immensely. These are small devices that can be activated to alarm you if anything is happening. For example, if the person under your care can’t reach the phone, they can contact you more easily with a pendant. They also have fall detection, sensing if they slip, and can send out a message to you to come and check on them.

Remind them it’s a change, not a downgrade

You should be considerate about their feelings and never act impatiently. Seniors are adapting to a different lifestyle, and it must be hard on them. Try to call them frequently, and remind them of the benefits of old age. Encourage them to learn a new language, join a book club and visit local community events. There must be some art exhibitions, galleries, concerts and theatre shows they would be interested in attending, and they often offer senior discounts. Help them organize several activities for peers on a weekly basis, such as card game night. Provide them with books and crossword puzzles. If possible, encourage them to stay active and exercise.

Losing a part of your independence is an inevitable part of growing older. It is something we will all go through. Understanding our elderly loved ones is a major part of the ultimate goal of keeping them safe. Changes in their strength, bodily functions, metabolism, and motivation can’t be stopped or altered, but everything else can be, including their home environment, daily routines, and responsibilities.

Pay attention to their behavior, there are going to be a lot of things they won’t admit to, probably even to themselves! Remind them that people now have a longer life expectancy and a healthier lifestyle and habits can bring them unexpected happiness. Not to mention the advanced technology they can use to monitor and improve their lives.

6 Affordable Desk Improvements to Make the Day at Work Go by Faster

Spending too much time at your desk? You might feel comfortable, but most of your bad habits can lead to long-term problems. Ergonomics can reduce your risk of health problems and create a comfortable work environment.

There are simple and affordable adjustments you can make to your office environment that will make it safer. Some of these changes can also increase your productivity.

Ergonomic Upgrades

It can be easy to forget about your office environment when you’re knee deep in work. Sometimes it creeps up on you before you know it. Save your body from the strain of aches and pains with some of these affordable ergonomic upgrades.

One way is to elevate your computer or laptop to eye level. This can save you from hunching over or straining your neck. If your computer is your work machine, elevate it to your eye level using a standing desk or laptop stand.

Swap out your traditional desk for a standing desk. Some of them cost as little as $20. If you want something fancier, invest in an adjustable desk or tread-puter. Even taking a break from your desk every so often can be a break for your neck.

There’s no need to break the bank when it comes to investing in the right hardware for your computer. If you’ve been stuck with the same mouse and keyboard all this time, then it’s time for a change. If you’re using a laptop with an external mouse and keyboard, this can lead to carpal tunnel down the line.

Tired of cramping your wrists with a worn-out keyboard or wireless mouse? Invest in a new keyboard and mouse set that’s ergonomically designed. While it won’t make your computer run any faster, it’ll save your wrists from using cheap hardware.

You should also invest in a bigger, clearer monitor as well. It’s one way to improve your work experience. This allows you to see multiple tabs, screens, or applications all on one screen without straining your eyes.

The future is wireless. Gone are the days when you’d forget you had headphones on and tried to move away from your desk only to have them snatched from off your head. We’ve had wireless headphones now for a good few years. They are a good idea in case your job requires you to make calls or you just prefer having some music on while you work without bothering anyone else.

If you’re pushing yourself too hard on a given project, you should be taking regular breaks to give your arms, eyes, and wrists a break. If mental reminders aren’t cutting it then install AntiRSI, Timeout, or Workrave on your laptop or computer. These programs remind you to take a break and get up from your desk every so often.

Eye strain can happen to those who write code or copy all day long. Two ways to correct this issue is to increase your monitor’s refresh rate and install ClearType or EyeDefender. You can also use a darker desktop theme to reduce the amount of time looking at a bright screen.

Mobile Apps

The productivity app DeskTime can help improve your performance. This automatic time tracking app allows you to increase your productivity so you can focus on more mportant tasks. You won’t find yourself hunched over your desk, trying to get that project done.

The aptly titled Office Ergonomics allows you to set up your workstation to prevent discomfort and cramping. This mobile app includes animated graphics and interactive tips for setting up your office environment for optimized comfort. These tips will allow you to make changes with the things that you have, and help you uncover new solutions.

Cloud Storage

One option to improve your work experience is on the cloud. You can move most of your important documents and files to a cloud-storage service. Most of these services are free and allow you to delete local copies once you moved them to the cloud.

This frees up room on your computer’s hard drive. It also makes it easy to move those files when it comes time to upgrade to a new computer.

There are plenty of cloud-storage services available, including Dropbox, Google Drive, iCloud, and OneDrive. Most of them allow you to backup photos to the cloud, while others are strictly for documents. Your options depend on the type of operating system you own, the amount of storage you need, and how much you’re willing to invest for storage.

Sleep Support

Sometimes changing your sleep routine can help improve your work life. How your joints feel at work can be influenced by how much sleep you get at night. The ideal sleep position for a great night’s sleep is on your side with your knees bent and a pillow placed in between the knees. Your head should be placed on a single pillow.

You should also have a regular sleep routine. This includes falling asleep at the same time every night and banning electronics from your bedroom. You should avoid using any screens (including the television) at least an hour before your designated bedtime.

Lighting isn’t just for decorating – it’s beneficial for your eyes. A desk light is important for reading documents and files. The right lighting can prevent computer vision syndrome, blurred vision, dizziness, dry eyes, eye fatigue, eyestrain, headaches, light sensitivity, and other problems.

People underestimate the amount of light they need to work on a task. It’s important to choose a light that’s attached to an arm that you can adjust to your liking. Position the light opposite to the hand that you write with, and shine it on papers but away from the computer monitor to cut down on glare.

Lifestyle Improvements

Changing your lifestyle can also improve your work life. If you spend most of your day sitting at your desk, it’s important to schedule regular work breaks. Take two to three 30- to 60-second breaks each hour to give your body time to recover.

Drinking more water throughout the day will have you getting up from your desk more to refill your bottle and to make trips to the bathroom. This will ensure that you’re taking regular breaks from your desk throughout the day.

Ever wondered what happens to old mattresses? If you are an online shopper, then you may not enjoy the privilege of the brand owners taking care of your old mattress. However, beds can be recycled.

You can repurpose the springs and metals used while recycling the foam and fabrics involved in manufacturing it.

Dust mites keep you company

Did you know that you may not be sleeping alone in your bed? Dust mites are found almost anywhere where human beings and animals live, and more specifically, hide in mattresses. Even the best ratedmattressin the market will build up with dust mites the moment you start using them.

Although the dust mites are harmless, they may cause your allergies and asthma to flare up, giving you restless nights. If your allergies are too much to bear, consider getting an allergen resistant mattress cover and pillows, mainly since you cannot completely get rid of the dust mites.

Mattresses put up with dead cells at night

You may think that you have been kind to your mattress, but the truth is, you sweat and shed dead skin cells on your mattress all night long. With other fluids that also play a part in dirtying your mattress like saliva drools, mucus, among others, you need to use bedding before you sleep on your mattress.

Further, wash your bedding as frequent as possible, at least once every two weeks. You can also vacuum your mattress every once in a while when you deem it fit.

A messy bed may be better

While tidiness is closer to cleanliness, a messy bed might be better than a well-made and spread one. Ideally, when you cover your mattress lining it with bedding after another, you trap in moisture and other things, which breeds a comfortable home for the dust mites, and therefore they are likely to increase.

Leaving your sheets to air out in the sun allows your mattress to air as well, and so getting rid of more dust mites. If a messy bed is not your idea of a good bed, then consider airing your bed every once in a while, perhaps once every week, to freshen your bed.

‘Sleep tight’ on ropes

Do you know where the phrase ‘sleep tight’ originated from? Well, the whole idea of ‘sleep tight’ was drawn from the early American beds that had ropes tightly running through the frame of the bed. Instead of the wood frame, the mattress would lie on the tightropes.A mattress is such an essential part of the household, offering your comfort in the sleeping hours of your night. For deep and proper sleep which is necessary for a healthy lifestyle, learn to take care of your mattress bed.

3 Ways To Improve Your Health Using Technology

Medicine is one branch of science that has evolved rapidly over the past several generations. A key contributor to this advancement is technological breakthroughs providing better tools.

New EHR (electronic health record) systems allow healthcare providers to share and consult on centralized patient data, no matter where the doctors or the patient might be. Caregivers can collect all information through tech, from how teeth get brushed to constant monitoring of blood pressure. Extensive, personalized medical information is an advantage every ailing person can look forward to.

Healthcare solutions have also found their place online. Most providers now maintain web portals where patients can set appointments, review diagnoses and results, or educate themselves on treatments, prescriptions, and other forms of care.

These technologies offer patients and physicians a more timely, effective approach to treatment. Doctors can make better decisions and save more lives.

Telehealth is a solution that utilizes communication technologies. Invalid or remote patients can consult healthcare professionals with no travel required. Video and audio communication takes place over the internet.

This is especially helpful in rural communities that need a long drive to the nearest healthcare facility. For those with chronic ailments who need regular care, this is a major inconvenience.   With virtual medicine, doctors can do visual exams, show healthcare techniques, and carry on in-depth conversations.

Unfortunately, there are laws discouraging this in some areas. But, as telemedicine proves its value, it will likely become commonplace.

Technology is also improving in computerized healthcare systems, including data analysis and artificial intelligence. Software is becoming a valuable healthcare tool in checking symptoms, testing results and medical histories to recommend more effective treatments and enable faster and more accurate diagnoses.

One solution for remote patients is the health check chair. Patients can sit there in comfort and connect to sensors that record and send their vital signs in real time to healthcare provider systems. This allows professionals to perform monitoring and analysis for developing more effective treatments.

Considering the growing costs of medical care, technology can be a significant benefit. As technologies become more common and more efficient the cost tends to fall.

Wearable Technology

Gadgets for monitoring your health come in many forms. This gives you and your caregivers immediate notice as readings change. Anomalies compared to your past health data could show that you need emergency care or a change in treatments.

The range of meters and health monitoring gadgets are a useful resource not only for people with chronic conditions, but for those suffering from an acute illness or injury that needs closer tracking. There are several FDA-approved devices already in wide use. These include BioPatch, which can record your vital signs several times a day and automatically send the results to nurses or other caregivers via smartphone apps.

The same technology is also improving the quality of care within hospitals. Sensors, cameras, radio frequency (RFID) tags are all orchestrated into a single comprehensive system. This allows caregivers to view healthcare records on mobile devices, track patient movement, medications, and equipment location for your increased safety and security and empowering faster medical decisions and emergency responses.

Yet, wearable health tech is not just for recording your heart rate or respiration to better ensure a speedy recovery. People can also use it in preventive medicine, and even for physical therapy or training through monitoring your movements and physiological responses.

For many, tech opens new possibilities through smart clothing. This could be anything from a bra or pair of socks to a full body suit outfitted with sensors and transmitters. If you’re not sick at all, but trying to lose weight or train for the Olympics, this tech can help you understand how your body works and where you need to make improvements.

Health Apps

The millions of smartphones in use have also created a flood of useful apps for the health-conscious. Now everyone can check their own physical condition and better maintain a healthy balance in their lives. Affordable apps are designed for those who wish to stay in good shape and helps those with a medical condition to become more self-reliant.

For instance, young people on their own at college tend to eat poorly. An app such as All i Can Eat helps them follow a healthier diet, including avoiding allergies for items such as peanuts or shellfish. The app can benefit others, for instance, if you are lactose intolerant or have stomach problems, by helping you stick to the right food choices.

An app available through helps you track daily medications. A diabetic, for example, can use the app to track and regulate insulin use. It can also help you identify pills or look up conflicts with new medications.

Medscape gives you access to over 3,500 medical conditions, including symptoms, treatments, new research, and other relevant information. It will also help you locate health care providers (U.S.) based on your smartphone GPS location. Medscape is free from WebMD.

A user-friendly health app on your smartphone can help with both prevention and treatments wherever you go, whenever you need them. There are apps available for sending alerts to friends, managing alcohol intake, making healthy meal choices, even tracking menstrual cycles and pregnancies. Whatever condition you may have that you’d like to monitor, you’ll most likely be able to find an app for it.

Technology has given patients more control over their own health. While a doctor’s knowledge and expertise are still essential in most cases, there is now a range of options helping you to take better care of yourself.

Type II Diabetes and Alcoholism

Is there someone in your life suffering from diabetes, and they happen to have had a history of alcoholism? Turns out they have a direct link to each other – read on to find out more.

When talking about addiction to drugs and alcohol and the general state of your health, it is no secret that they affect each other immensely. While you may gain some benefits when you drink in moderation, heavy drinking is the exact opposite of this – it poses a very big threat to everything regarding your health, ranging from life expectancy to the functioning of your organs. Alcohol in particular, leads to long term damage of the brain functions, the liver, as well as other aspects such as blood pressure.

Among the many illnesses that develop in long term heavy drinkers include alcoholic hepatitis due to liver damage, as well as cirrhosis. However, there is increasing evidence that heavy drinking leads to the onset of type 2 diabetes, also referred to as adult-onset diabetes. This serves to put your health in grave danger due to the increased mortality rate.

What exactly is Type II Diabetes?

Diabetes is not one disease on its own – it actually refers to a group of illnesses that are due to blood sugar levels being too high. They are of two types – Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes.

Type 1 diabetes is also known as juvenile diabetes that occurs during childhood, and is because the body fails to produce its own insulin. Instead of healthy cells in the pancreas being allowed to function and produce insulin, the immune system attacks them and destroys them completely. This leads to the necessity of artificial insulin supplies.

Type 2 diabetes is also referred to as adult diabetes, and is the most common form of the illness, affecting between 90 to 95 percent of all diabetes cases. In this form, the body either fails to utilize the insulin the pancreatic cells are generating, or it fails to produce sufficient levels of insulin. This is called insulin resistance, and it unfortunately cannot be treated with a pump. Instead, it forces the patient to monitor their food intake carefully in order to regulate their blood sugar level.

Type 2 diabetes has no cure, and you can only manage it through a healthy diet, regular exercise and some medication forms. The bad news is the condition can worsen over time and lead to death due to other complications. Another thing to note is this – lifestyle plays a dominant role in the development of the illness.

Type 2 diabetes and its link to alcoholism

Alcohol has numerous negative effects on the body, as it mostly affects the brain, liver and heart. Prolonged drinking habits such as binge drinking can lead to significant negative effects on overall health, and can result in overdoses and premature death. However, not many know about the links between alcohol abuse and Type 2 Diabetes.

This is in conjunction with other factors such as inactivity and excess weight. The major way that alcohol abuse leads to diabetes is reducing sensitivity to insulin, especially for heavy drinkers. Many alcoholic drinks such as wine and beer contain natural sugars and carbohydrates that reduce the balancing act of the body.

Pancreatitis is a major factor in the development of diabetes, and this is the inflammation of the cells in the pancreas that are responsiblefor secretion of insulin. This also leads to the development of the illness.

The calories content of alcohol is rather high, and some alcoholic drinks have higher calorific content than others. The combination of heavy drinking and physical inactivity leads to weight gain and obesity, so that contributes to weight related risks.

In addition to raising the risk of getting diabetes, alcohol can actually worsen the symptoms for those who already have the illness. For instance, the onset of hypoglycemia (low blood sugar levels) increases when a diabetic patient drinks on an empty stomach, while the damage to the diabetic nerves can become worse when someone is under the influence of alcohol.

Trying to address alcoholism and diabetes

Similar to addiction, diabetes has no cure – although you can manage the risk factors to reduce the chances of significant damages to the body such as vascular damage and neuropathy. Because of this, many patients with diabetes are encouraged to lose weight for health reasons, in addition to maintaining a healthy diet and stop consumption of alcohol.

Another effect of alcohol intake in a diabetic person is the development of hyperglycemia, or high blood sugar. This is a common effect from binge drinking in particular, and it is characterized by drowsiness, shaking, nervousness, confusion, dizziness and excessive sweating. This condition is life threatening if not dealt with urgently, and it can result in the person slipping into a coma or fainting. What makes it even more dangerous is because you might mistake it as an effect of drunkenness, and you neglect it as a result.

The bottom line is this – even though alcohol consumption has negative effects on its users, it is very bad for those who are diabetic, and it can even be life threatening. When you consume alcohol in moderation, it may have some benefits in certain situations, such as reduction of the chances of heart disease.

This might be the case for diabetics, but it is only when their blood sugar is under complete control and they do not have other conditions that may complicate the issue significantly like high blood pressure.

Moderate consumption of alcohol depends on the type of alcohol one is taking (due to differences in alcohol content), although the general guideline would be a maximum of one glass a day for women and two glasses for men. It is therefore important to consult with your doctor if you are diabetic and considering having some alcohol consumption.

Final thoughts

It is never easy trying to deal with alcohol addiction, but it becomes even more difficult when combining it with diabetes. However, you can overcome the problem through proper treatment at the recovery villageand willingness to reduce alcohol intake completely.
